Class Descriptions

Mysore

Mysore is the traditional way of learning Ashtanga yoga. In Mysore style classes, each student is addressed individually by the teacher and taught the sequence of poses, how to breath fully, and other methods for calming and focusing the mind. Students learn through practice, repetition, and remembering what they are taught. Anyone can learn yoga in a Mysore class. No experience required. It is easy to learn and offers many benefits. Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health are all impoved through regular and consistent practice.

There is nothing advanced about Mysore, beginners are welcome. The Mysore class setting is a supportive environment where new students as well as experienced students learn and practice together. As you gain strength, stamina, flexibility and focus, poses will be added to your sequence. It is perhaps the only way that the more advanced asanas or postures can be learned safely. By committing yourself fully to one yoga style, one teaching method, and regular practice, you open the door to a deeper experience of yoga.

Beginners can plan for about 30-40 minutes for your first class. It is recommended that new students to Myosre commit a minimum of one month to attend classes on a regular basis - at least 3 days per week. This allows one to gain an understanding of the practice and to notice the benefits that come from a regular yoga practice.

The Mysore Program classes are Tuesday and  Thursday mornings from 6:30am to 8:30am, Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:00pm to 6:45pm, Friday evening from 4:15pm to 7:00pm, and Saturday morning from 9:30am to 12:15pm. You can start your practice any time up to 1 hour before the class ends.

Beginners Ashtanga

This 60 minute beginner class will introduce you slowly to the Ashtanga sequence, concentrating on healthy alignment, and establishing a deeper awareness of breath. These classes create a strong and safe foundation from which you can then explore other levels. Slowly over time you will be able to do more and more. The benefits include increased strength, flexibility, balance, concentration, relaxation, and self-awareness.

Level 1 Ashtanga

In this 75 minute class students will be led through the first half of the Ashtanga Primary series in its traditional format. This class is more vigorous and will connect the postures with more fluid movement (vinyasas). This class is best suited for students who are familiar with the series. Come and sweat, build strength, flexibility and a focused calm mind

Flow Yoga (Vinyasa yoga)

A fun, active, flowing style yoga class to music, designed to develop strength, cardiovascular health, and flexibility. This class is appropriate for all levels. Those new to the practice will be offered modifications and attention to alignment, where the advanced students will be given more challenging versions of the poses. This class will leave you feeling stretched, strong and inspired.

Yin Yoga

This class is suitable for all levels and is a perfect complement to an active (yang) style of yoga such as Ashtanga. Yin Yoga is the relaxed practice of floor postures that emphasizes the connective tissues of the hips, thighs, pelvis, and lower spine – targeting deeper than the muscular or superficial tissue. The result is deep relaxation and improved range of motion.
